Sound RIDER! Gorge Kid's Explorer Fund

What Is It?

The Sound RIDER! Gorge Kid's Explorer Fund is a pool of money set aside each year to fund educational and recreational activities for youth living in the counties surrounding the National Scenic Columbia River Gorge Area of the Northwest United States.  These counties include Wasco (OR), Hood River (OR), Klickitat (WA), Skamania (WA), Clark (WA) and Multnomah (OR).

Monies can be requested by each counties Parks & Recreation divisions, area museums, visitors centers, schools and other recreational and educational entities to cover the cost of educational and recreational activities that will expand a youth's knowledge about the history and understanding of the area in which they live.  This may include, but is not limited to, field trips to Oregon's Vista House, Washington's Goldendale Observatory, hikes along historical areas of US Highway 30 including Oregon's Multnomah Falls, educational excursions to and around Washington's Mt. St. Helens and visits to the educational centers in the Gorge in both Washington and Oregon.

Why the Fund Exists

Each year Sound RIDER! puts on a week long motorcycle event called 'Rally Week in the Gorge.' Held at the end of each August, the event draws motorcyclists from all over the US and Canada and provides a chance for them to explore one of the most beautiful places in the Northwest. In talking with local kids and parents, it became apparent to Sound RIDER! associates we were learning more about the region through our reconnaissance trips to the area than most youth (and parents) knew that lived locally in the Gorge region.

The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular place to learn both a wealth of history and various sciences including geology, biology and botany.  We feel it's important for youth living in the region to learn all they can about where they live as they are the future body that will continue to protect this crown jewel of the Northwest in years to come.
